Colonel Bates This fly was named after Joseph D. Bates who commissioned Carrie to tie flies for him. Carrie named the fly after him as a tribute for his service in WW1. He served for many years in the service, and the fly actually started out as the Captain Bates, then was renamed to the Major Bates and finally the Colonel Bates as his rank changed.
